The Shazam film is about to hit theaters later tonight but he might already have a minor role in a future film. The next Mortal Kombat movie will have Raiden playing as Shazam inside the Injustice video game, according to series co-creator Ed Boon. This is probably a joke, given Boon’s occasional lighthearted, playful behavior on Twitter and how an Elder God probably doesn’t play video games. Probably.
But anything is possible especially given the relationship between Mortal Kombat and DC Comics. Aside from NetherRealm Studios developing the Mortal Kombat games, Injustice series, and the crossover Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, the WB Games Twitter account tweeted out a video of Zachary Levi’s Shazam playing Mortal Kombat X that might be in the full movie, given how it has a Mortal Kombat reference. Boon then pointed out the coincidences and then also tweeted saying that “In the next Mortal Kombat movie, we WILL have a scene where Raiden is playing SHAZAM in INJUSTICE.”
The news surrounding the next Mortal Kombat movie has been kicking around recently. Along with briefly mentioning a possible Marvel vs. DC fighting game, Boon talked about how he had a “serious meeting” about the next MK movie around five months ago where he learned that it does have a script. He stated that he’s excited if it goes into the right hands, but wants it “to get killed” if it falls into the wrong hands.
Boon also came out in July 2018 and addressed the rumors surrounding the movie. He called them “BS” and people should not “believe everything [they] read.” Those rumors were quite bizarre as they were a big departure from the Mortal Kombat lore and focused on a new character named Cole Turner, a widowed boxer.
All of this movie talk is coming just on the cusp of Mortal Kombat 11‘s release. We’re still getting roster reveals on a weekly basis as well as new trailers and streams. Speaking of streams, there will be another Kombat Kast this Friday at 1 PM PT breaking down Noob Saibot and two other fighters. Some of this may be old news to some as the roster leaked in February.
