Have you ever wondered, “whatever happened to Twisted Metal?” Well, sadly PlayStation seems to have forgotten about the car combat game after the underwhelming 2012 entry. To fill that void, Skybound Games has released Notmycar, a car combat battle royale.
Notmycar is a new free-to-play battle royale game with a very simple twist: all cars, all the time. No more hoofing it up hills and scavenging for assault rifles and grenades. Instead, Notmycar has players driving around a huge map, upgrading their cars’ armor and weaponry, and blasting enemies off the road. The free-to-play battle royale currently supports 40 players with plans to increase that cap to 75 or more. The game just hit early access today, and the developers plan to keep it there for around six months.
Notmycar currently supports solo and squad play. As with Fortnite and PUBG, Epic Games’ Unreal Engine powers the car combat battle royale. Skybound and developer NMC Studios released a launch trailer today, which you can see below. The game’s marketing definitely has an attitude, using such lines as, “buckle up, buttercup,” and “when shift gets real” to sell itself. It is a bit heavy on the memes, but the game itself seems solid — when it works.
Several Steam reviews have already pegged the game as “clunky,” “buggy,” and poorly optimized. Of course, all of this can change over the course of early access, but it’s not a great look coming off the starting line. With some real commitment from Skybound and NMC Studios, the game could become a good car-focused battle royale game. It could also be a PC Twisted Metal-style game, just without the character.
Skybound has an uphill battle to fight with Notmycar, as juggernauts like Fortnite, Apex Legends, and PUBG lay siege on other battle royale games. That being said, none of them are doing what Notmycar is doing, and the game could find a niche for itself. It is available now for Windows through Steam.
