Sea of Thieves, Microsoft and Rare’s collaborative sea-sailing adventure, has just put out an anniversary edition on the Microsoft Store. The original game came out March 20 of last year and has since received a ton of content updates and other changes. Of course, Sea of Thieves Anniversary Edition has all of these and something called the Sea Dog pack. It costs $49.99.
The Sea Dog pack includes Sea Dog-themed items like a hat, pistol, or cutlass, and 10,000 gold. However, this is the only unique piece of content within the pack. Otherwise, all of the updates and content have been free to everyone who has bought the game. Instead, the Anniversary Edition is more of a marketing ploy than anything else. Though it must be said, this edition comes along just in time for the Anniversary Update, “an expanded and enriched experience that builds on last year’s maiden voyage in a whole range of game-changing ways.” More details can be found over on the Microsoft Store.
This update breaks into two formats: The Arena and Tall Tales – Shores of Gold. The former is a competitive PvP mode that pits multiple teams against one another. It’s run by the Sea Dogs faction, who have their own tavern where you can buy rewards with points you earn from fighting in The Arena. The latter is a story-focused journey that has you searching for a hidden island. It brings with new minibosses, NPCs, and items, and releases on April 30. You can read more about these changes here.
Otherwise, the Anniversary Update will bring with cooking and fishing mechanics on top of new factions to level up. It seems that a lot of this update is a direct response to player complaints since the game’s launch. When it first came out, Sea of Thieves had next to nothing for players to experience. There was barely any form of progression, and all of the rewards were purely cosmetic. Rare listened to players, however, and is working hard to offer an experience that’s worthy of our time and money.
