The Razer Toaster is actually happening

Some April Fools jokes are too good to let go. Thanks to the efforts of a group of fans, the Razer Toaster will see the light of day.

Fans have been clamoring for the Razer Toaster since at least 2013 when the “Give us the Razer Toaster” Facebook page was founded. Razer themselves made it the subject of their “Project Breadwinner” April Fools joke back in 2016.

Back in 2013 however, Razer co-founder and CEO Min-Liang Tan made a deal with Give us the Razer Toaster Facebook page manager Mark Withers saaying that they would make the toaster if their page got 1 million likes. Somewhere along the way, they also added that getting someone to get a Razer Toaster tattoo would count as 100,000 likes.

While it took over five years, the page has finally been able to hit the equivalent of 1 million likes. Specifically, they have 45,000 or so actual likes, and 12 people who have tattoos (including Withers himself).

Tan admits that at first, he didn’t think that the group would meet their goals. However, he mentions that he’s going to live up to his word and actually start development on the toaster.

“Well….what can I say. I’ve just officially liked their page – and I’m going to put together my team of designers and engineers,” states Tan. “It will take a few years – but I’ll be sure to share the progress – and make it a community affair. A Razer Toaster – For Razer Toaster Lovers. By Razer Toaster Lovers.”

Of course, Razer’s expertise doesn’t actually include kitchen appliances, let alone toasters.  That said, toasters aren’t particularly complex machines.  For all intents and purposes, they’re just timers that cut power to a spring loaded electromagnet, releasing the toast at the desired time.

Perhaps the better question then would be what Razer can do to make their toaster stand out. Their original April Fools joke demonstrates LED lighting, USB slots, and Razer logo heating elements. Only time will tell if the actual Razer Toaster will have any of these.
