Ghost Recon Wildlands

New Ghost Recon reveal coming this week

Ubisoft will be revealing a new Ghost Recon game later this week. The company has scheduled an announcement related to the series for this Wednesday, May 9.

The announcement posted to Ubisoft’s Twitter account states that the studio be showing the “world premiere” of the official announce trailer at 2:30 PM Eastern Time.

Ubisoft last visited the franchise with 2017’s Ghost Recon Wildlands. This game moved the series away from the futuristic setting of later games such as Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. Instead, it featured a modern day setting much closer to that of the original Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon from 2001.

Despite moving back to an older setting, Wildlands made one of the biggest changes to the series. Instead of the previous level-based structure, Wildlands now featured an open world similar to other Ubisoft franchises. This introduced a host of other elements to the series, such as a time-of-day system as well as side missions and optional objectives.

Throughout its life, Wildlands received a number of DLC missions. The latest of these, Operation Oracle, features Jon Bernthal, more popularly known as the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Punisher. Prior to this, Ubisoft had also released six other mission packs. Some of these had callbacks to previous Tom Clancy games, including Ghost Recon Future Soldier and even Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell.

This past weekend, Ubisoft made Wildlands free to play for a limited time on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. With the announcement of the reveal, it seems like the free weekend was timed to help get people hyped for the new game.

One thing people will be scrutinizing in the new game is its setting. Wildlands‘s choice of Bolivia for its open world caused a fair amount of controversy, with the Bolivian government stating that the game’s portrayal of their country was offensive. Ubisoft eventually issued a disclaimer, stating that the game was a work of fiction. With this in mind, Ubisoft may likely set the new game in some place less likely to cause controversy.
