Yoshinori Ono is teasing a Street Fighter 5 announcement for Evo 2019

Street Fighter 5 announcement teased for Evo 2019

Fans of Street Fighter 5 haven’t really had much in terms of new content as of late. Capcom hasn’t really added anything to its flagship fighter since December of last year. However, that may change soon as the game’s producer is teasing a Street Fighter 5 announcement at Evo 2019.

In a recent tweet, Street Fighter 5 producer Yoshinori Ono reached out to the game’s players, thanking them for their constant tweets to him. As part of this, he confirmed that the game’s development team was working with Capcom’s US and European offices on exciting “new things” for the game. He then makes mention of a “big event in Aug” where he can tell people about it.

While he doesn’t name the event, Ono seems to be hinting that the announcement will be made at Evo 2019. Taking place from August 2 to 4, 2019 at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, Evo is the largest fighting game tournament in the world.

Evo has had a close relationship with Capcom’s games, going back all the way to its roots as B3: Battle by the Bay in 1996. For the longest time, Capcom games such as Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom headlined Evo. Today, the event serves as the most prestigious event of the Capcom Pro Tour: Providing more points towards Capcom Cup in December than any other tournament.

Aside from this, Capcom as well as a few other companies have started scheduling major announcements at Evo. Fighting game fans comprise a majority of the events attendees and viewers. Also, any announcements made there don’t get drowned out by other announcements in more general video game trade shows like E3.

For this year, players anticipation for a Street Fighter 5 announcement is coming to a fever pitch. Unlike the past couple of years, Capcom did not release a new season of content at the start of this year. The company instead promised that it would be doing things differently for this season. With the announcement at Evo 2019, fans may finally get to see what exactly “different” means.
