Yooka and Laylee are returning for another adventure! Playtonic Games revealed the new Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair trailer, which showed off gameplay and mechanics of the new game starring Yooka and Laylee. The new game is coming this year for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC through Steam.
The charming trailer showed Yooka and Laylee traversing a colorful 3D overworld and tackling challenging 2D levels. Playtonic promises the game is “packed to the brim with collectibles, vibrant environments, and a bumbling batch of baddies to battle.” There will also be bees, bees, and more bees as you help Queen Phoebee restore order to the Royal Stingdom.
Playtonic has confirmed that this is not a direct sequel to the first game. On an FAQ page, Playtonic explained it would rather be able to do a fresh take on every game and add mechanics and gameplay without limiting itself to a sequential game series. That said, there will be plenty of familiar faces in The Impossible Lair as well as a bunch of new ones for us to meet.
The catchy music from Grant Kirkhope and David Wise and fit perfectly with the fun atmosphere. The feeling behind the trailer remains true to the first game and reminiscent of the game’s key influence, Banjo-Kazooie (which Grant Kirkhope also composed for).
We can expect to hear more information about The Impossible Lair as we approach E3 2019, but what has been revealed so far is exciting. While the game is being released digitally on all platforms, consoles will have hard copies available too. More information on those will be revealed soon. The game will also release on all platforms simultaneously. As for the exact release date, Playtonic says, “Later this year, probably sooner than you’d expect!” Keep an eye out for more news to follow!
