Arcade1up TMNT and Marvel Super Heroes cabinets revealed at E3

Arcade1up TMNT and Marvel Super Heroes cabinets are coming

At E3 2019, Arcade1up announced that it is releasing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Marvel Super Heroes themed retro arcade cabinets. The Arcade1up TMNT and Marvel Super Heroes cabinets will be released this coming August.

Arcade1up has made a name for itself releasing retro-styled arcade cabinets running emulations of classic arcade games. Recently, its Street Fighter II and Centipede cabinet even stood in for a real ones in Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel.

Each of the new cabinets will feature at least two games from each franchise. The TMNT cabinet comes with the original 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as well as its 1991 follow up, Turtles in Time. Many older players may be more familiar with the home ports for these. The former released on the NES as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: the Arcade Game, while the latter arrived on the Super NES as TMNT 4: Turtles in Time.

Both arcade originals differ a bit from the console releases. TMNT: The Arcade Game on the NES only allowed for 2 players, compared to 4 in the arcades. TMNT 4: Turtles in Time on the other hand actually gained new features such as mode 7 effects and stages when it was ported to the Super NES.

The Marvel Super Heroes cabinet comes with three games: The fighting games X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes as well as beat ’em up The Punisher. The two fighting games are the only non-crossover Marvel fighters that Capcom released. They also pioneered many of the mechanics such as super jumps, air combos, and more that many fighting games have since copied. Additionally, Marvel Super Heroes has players fighting for the Infinity Gems before taking on Thanos – something quite timely considering recent Marvel Cinematic Universe events.

The Punisher on the other hand is a beat ’em up like the TMNT games. In addition to The Punisher, players can also use the original (pre-Sam Jackson) Nick Fury to beat up baddies.

As with the company’s previous cabinets, the Arcade1up TMNT and Marvel Super Heroes cabinets stand at around four feet tall—lower than classic arcade cabinets. However, the company is also releasing matching risers to bring each cabinet to the proper height.
