Alan Wake re-release now possible as Remedy Entertainment acquires publishing rights from Microsoft

A spokesperson for Remedy Entertainment, developers behind the action-thriller Alan Wake, hinted that an Alan Wake re-release on new platforms may be possible. Remedy Entertainment has recently acquired the publishing rights to Alan Wake from Microsoft. Remedy has been moving away from its close ties to Microsoft ever since its current project Control was revealed on the PlayStation stage at E3 2018.

Now that Remedy has both the IP and publishing rights, it’s well within the realm of possibility that Alan Wake could be released on other platforms. Talking to Eurogamer, a spokesperson for Remedy said, “The only thing we want to clarify, now that Remedy owns the publishing rights, is that we could bring Alan Wake to different platforms if we so choose.”

After its release on the Xbox 360 in 2010, Alan Wake became something of a sensation. Despite the unusually long development time of over five years, it was praised for keeping players on the edges of their seats and presenting stunning environments and well-paced gameplay. The game follows an episodic format, making it feel more like a crime show than a game. A number of perfect and near-perfect scores from critics speak volumes about Alan Wake‘s success. It is currently available on Xbox 360 and through Steam.

While Remedy is currently focused on bringing Control to masses, which is expected to release in August, an Alan Wake PlayStation release looks likely for the future. Perhaps we’ll even get a sequel. While there was a hint of a sequel years ago that didn’t go anywhere, Alan Wake is still an important franchise for the studio. It released Alan Wake’s American Nightmare, a short standalone game that isn’t a full sequel, and there is also a TV show in the works. With the publishing rights secured and the IP still in hand, Remedy has set itself up to reintroduce Alan Wake to the current gaming generation. Now we just have to wait and see what the team does with it.
