Overwatch cookbook offers tasty lore and tastier treats

Sometimes, lore can be found in the strangest of places. Overwatch, Blizzard Entertainment’s very successful competitive team shooter, has told much of its lore through videos showcasing each of the playable heroes. Sure, those animations are really great, but do they give you recipes to some Overwatch themed treats? They most certainly do not. That’s where the official Overwatch cookbook comes in.

On Insight Edition’s website, we get a little preview of what can be found inside Overwatch: The Official Cookbook. As expected we get recipes based on the many heroes from the hero shooter. The three shown are based on the cowboy attacker McCree, the calm and collected support Zenyatta, and the big, bad tank Roadhog. The food and recipes themselves sound pretty great, but it’s the little tidbits that explain the food’s origin that will interest any Overwatch fan.

The “Radioactive” Lemon-Lime Soda Float makes it obvious that this is a Roadhog-inspired beverage. However, the little description at the top of the page gives the drink more allure, making it a part of Overwatch‘s world.

“This little beauty was thought up by the proprietor of the take-away food joint just inside the gates of Junkertown,” the description begins, “and Mako discovered it one day after a day of successfully selling off his scrap metal.” For those unaware, Mako is Roadhog’s actual name. The excerpt continues, “He now drops in whenever he can — that is, if he can get back in through the gates without the Queen of Junkertown noticing.”

This is just one of many examples that are in the Overwatch cookbook. The Til Ko Laddu Sesame Sweets, which can also be previewed, talks about Zenyatta and the Shambali monks who use food to “spread empathy and peace to those they pass” despite their inability to eat themselves. It’s pretty neat to see that Chelsea Monroe-Cassel, the writer of the Overwatch cookbook, really put some thought into these recipes, both for flavor and for those looking for more lore about the game.

Monroe-Cassel is no stranger to penning video game-themed cookbooks. She is also responsible for writing World of Warcraft: The Official Cookbook, Hearthstone: Innkeeper’s Tavern Cookbook, and The Elder Scrolls: The Official Cookbook. Additionally, she also co-authored A Feast of Ice and Fire: The Official Game of Thrones Companion Cookbook.
