Red Alert Remastered Tesla Tank revealed, ‘playable for the first time’

It’s been known for a while now that Electronic Arts is in the process of remastering the first two games in the Command and Conquer series, which are to the RTS genre what Doom is to the first-person shooter. Command and Conquer Remastered is due out at the end of 2020, and it’s being joined by its alternate universe spin-off Red Alert Remastered, too. We’ve heard a few bits and pieces about Command and Conquer from the team, but today we got our first look at the Red Alert Remastered Tesla Tank and an update on both games’ progress.

Series producer Jim Vessella took to Reddit to show off the first updated model of a Red Alert unit, in this case the classic Soviet Tesla Tank. He went into detail on how the team arrived at the design, not just updating the old pixel-based model with new detail, but also making sure that it is quickly identifiable to the player from from above. Vessella and the team “feel like the Tesla Tank here strikes a good balance between readability and those added details.” However, he did admit that there is a conversation going on about how accurate the tank is, since the in-cutscene version has two “rings” around the ball in the center. “Perhaps we can get feedback here from the greater community to help decide this unit’s final look,” he asked.

Vessella also shared a progress report about the games. Command and Conquer Remastered reached its first production milestone, and the game’s first campaign mission has been brought to alpha quality. As for Red Alert, it’s apparently now “playable for the first time” and has many assets now completed. Both games are still a long way off being completely playable, however.

Both Command and Conquer and Red Alert Remastered are being worked on by Petroglyph, the studio behind Star Wars: Empire at War and the recent Conan Unconquered, which includes several members who actually worked on the original Command and Conquer games at Westwood.
