Ever since The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red has been no stranger to card games. As such, it should come as no surprise that it has announced a Cyberpunk 2077 card game for next year. Unlike Gwent however, Cyberpunk 2077 — Afterlife: The Card Game will have actual, physical cards.
As part of the game’s announcement, CD Project Red revealed that it’s developing the card game with help from board game publisher CMON. The latter previously worked on other video game based tabletop games including the God of War card game, as well as a Bloodborne board game.

In Cyberpunk 2077 — Afterlife: The Card Game, players take on the role of Fixers, the “databrokers and masterminds of Night City.” In this role, players play to earn Street Cred by sending out cyberpunks to complete various missions. Before this however, they’ll need to actually recruit, train, and equip these cyberpunks to make sure they survive their missions. This is important as those who do survive their missions become Veterans, who then transfer their experience onto newer recruits.
In addition to all the above, players need to balance their needs and wants alongside their Street Cred. To enable this, the game implements “an innovative drafting mechanic.” It combines this with a special dashboard from which players much choose which cards to buy, or which do they sacrifice for more funds to buy other cards.
Releasing a physical card game seems to be an unusual move from CD Projekt RED, especially since its last card game was purely digital. However, doing so seems to be paying homage to Cyberpunk 2077 ‘s roots in Mike Pondsmith’s original Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop RPG. Of course, Afterlife isn’t the only new tabletop endeavor related to Cyberpunk 2077. Mike Pondsmith recently released Cyberpunk Red, a new edition of the tabletop RPG that streamlines the series’ lore in preparation for Cyberpunk 2077.
