Epic Game Store free games for next week include Hyper Light Drifter, Mutant Year Zero

Hyper Light Drifter and Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden are next week’s Epic Games Store free games. The current free games are Alan Wake and For Honor, as well as GNOG, a trippy puzzle game with colorful visuals and VR support.

Continuing its streak of making a non-M-rated game available whenever an M-rated game is free, Epic is bringing Hyper Light Drifter (T-rated) and Mutant Year Zero (M-rated) for free to the Epic Games Store next week, just as it did with Alan Wake and For Honor in early August. This will be the third time Epic has released two games for free simultaneously.

Hyper Light Drifter and Mutant Year Zero will be available from August 15 to August 22. As always, those who “purchase” them free of charge during that period will have access to them for the foreseeable future. Users can still get Alan Wake and For Honor free until tomorrow, August 9, and GNOG will be free until August 15.

Hyper Light Drifter is a top-down, indie action RPG from developer Heart Machine with colorful pixel art graphics and tough combat. Players embark on a journey to cure the titular drifter protagonist of a mysterious disease. Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden mixes stealth gameplay with XCOM-like strategy set in a post-apocalyptic world. Players stealth into an area to set up their combat strategies, then enter turn-based tactical combat.

The Epic Games Store began giving out a free game every two weeks when it launched in December 2018, and it increased the offering to a free game every week following the Epic Mega Sale in May 2019. Epic first implemented this two-game, M-rating policy when it released This War of Mine and Moonlighter for free in July, furthering the potential output of free games. Following Moonlighter’s free availability, Epic quietly enabled cloud saves for the game and said wider support for the feature would come later.
