Total War Shogun 2 Fall of the Samurai expansion rebranded as Total War Saga game

Total War: Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai expansion rebranded as Total War Saga game

Total War: Shogun 2’s standalone Fall of the Samurai expansion has officially been rebranded as part of the Total War Saga series. The game is now called A Total War Saga: Fall of the Samurai.

Announced on the Total War website, the Total War Saga: Fall of the Samurai rebranding means Steam users who buy the game will receive all but one of its previously released DLC packs. This gives players access to the Saga, Obama, Tsu, and Sendai factions. Additionally, users who already own the Fall of the Samurai expansion will get the DLC for free. The Blood Pack, which adds decapitation and blood effects to the game, will still need to be purchased separately in order for new purchasers or previous owners to access it. To celebrate the relaunch, developer Creative Assembly announced that Total War Saga: Fall of the Samurai will be on sale for $7.49 — 75% off its base price — until August 19.

The Total War Saga series is a spin-off of the mainline Total War series that focuses more on specific moments of history than epic retellings of longer historical periods. The first Saga game, Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia, released in May 2018 and tells the story of various factions fighting to become rulers of the British Isles in 878 C.E. A trademark Creative Assembly recently filed for Total War Saga: Troy suggests the developers are in the process of creating a new Saga game set in the Trojan War.

According to Creative Assembly, Total War: Shogun 2’s Fall of the Samurai expansion, which tells the story of Japanese samurai’s struggle against Western imperialists, has informed the development of other Saga titles since its 2012 release. Since the Saga series is essentially a continuation of the kind of game design established by Fall of the Samurai, Creative Assembly thought it made sense to make the expansion into a Saga game of its own.
