The Last of Us has shipped a whopping 3.4 million units since its launch three weeks ago. According to Sony Computer Entertainment, Naughty Dog's bleak and depressing action-adventure "surpassed all sales expectations."
So far The Last of Us is the fastest-selling PlayStation 3 game of 2013, and the fastest-selling new IP in the history of Sony's third gaming console. Sony Worldwide Studios President Shuhei Yoshida had the following to say about the game's success:
These sales figures are a testament to the blockbuster quality of The Last of Us. The teams at Naughty Dog are true visionaries and their storytelling capabilities are second to none, this title is an undisputed demonstration of that. SCE continues to be committed to delivering unique gameplay experiences that redefine the interactive entertainment industry and The Last of Us is a perfect example.
Does this mean we'll be getting a sequel on the PlayStation 4? In all honesty, I really hope the game remains a standalone experience, but there's certainly potential for more money to be made off of the post-apocalyptic world Naughty Dog has created.
