Cerny: DualShock 4 Designed To Be A “More Ideal Controller” For Shooters

Speaking with PlayStationLifeStyle, PS4 lead system architect Mark Cerny said that Sony's newly redesigned control pad was made specifically with first-person (and I assume third-person) shooters in mind.

When asked about the new PlayStation Camera and DualShock 4, Cerny said both were "extraordinarily broad collaborations." Features were outlined and feedback was solicited directly from developers:

Specifically with regard to the trigger buttons and the joysticks we also designed DualShock 4 to be a more ideal controller for first person shooters. So in order to do that we contacted the best of the best in the genre, both inside and outside of Sony Computer Entertainment, and sent them various prototypes to get their feedback.

Cerny says the DualShock 4 team requested feedback about trigger stiffness, throw distance, position of triggers, joystick accuracy, concavity or convexity of the joysticks, dead spot size, and more. "The result was definitely a controller that was much closer to the ideal first person shooter controller."
