A Project Resistance offline story mode will be included in Capcom’s next game set within the Resident Evil universe. Project Resistance was originally advertised as a 4v1 asymmetrical co-op experience, but most Resident Evil fans weren’t exactly thrilled with the prospect, clamoring for another single-player story-driven title or a new chapter in the Resident Evil Outbreak series.
Aware of the substantial criticism directed at Project Resistance, Capcom has decided to act by catering to fans with the introduction of an offline story mode. Resident Evil: Project Resistance producer Kawata Masachika told PlayStation Blog about this new feature.
ALSO: Project Resistance isn’t what the Resident Evil franchise needs right now
“The version we showed at TGS 2019 was an online game mode, but we are fully aware that there many are Resident Evil fans that expect the story in the game,” Masachika said. “In an effort to satisfy our fans, we will have an offline mode that is focused on the narrative component.”
Masachika did not reveal any details on the Project Resistance offline story mode, so it’s anyone’s guess right now if it will be anything remotely close to Resident Evil 2 Remake or Resident Evil 7, or just a mode hurriedly concocted in a bid to silence the most vocal critics of the game. Other multiplayer-focused entries in the series, like 2012’s Operation Raccoon City, were heavily criticized for their hollow single-player modes.
Comparisons to Resident Evil Outbreak are commonplace, but Masachika clearly states that the upcoming game isn’t a remake. While having normal citizens as survivors is something inspired by Outbreak, the addition of the player-controlled Mastermind pushes the game in a different direction.
Masachika concluded the interview by talking about how the co-op works within the series’ established roots and urged players to give it a shot.
“Project Resistance is still in development and we cannot give all the details, but I would like everyone who thought that the game looked unique or maybe thought playing the Mastermind seemed fun, to try this game out,” he said. “We believe we gave it a Resident Evil taste by giving players the experience of overcoming unexpected challenges through cooperation.”
However, many fans apparently beg to differ, judging by the dislikes and overall negative reactions to the Project Resistance gameplay overview video.
