Long Meowth

Long Meowth revives dead meme in Pokemon Sword and Shield

The latest CoroCoro magazine cover revealed several new Gigantamax Pokemon that are set to appear in the upcoming Pokemon Sword and Shield, most notable of which was Long Meowth. No doubt playing on the 2006 “Longcat” meme, the ever up-to-date folks at Nintendo and The Pokemon Company may well have created the ultimate creature.

Video Game journalist Ryan Brown shared the discovery via Twitter, directing his followers’ eyes towards the portion of the cover that features Gigantamax renditions of Pokemon including Eevee, Pikachu, Charizard, and, of course, “Looooooong Meowth.” It’s easy to argue that Pokemon character designs have been getting increasingly outlandish as more and more generations fill out an expanding Pokedex, but Long Meowth, in particular, is sure to attract a lot of attention online.

We haven’t seen the lengthy feline in-game yet, but it’ll definitely be intriguing to discover how the companion to Team Rocket is animated. Will Meowth flop about the place like one of the wacky waving inflatable arm-flailing tube men he looks so much like, or somehow maintain a strong backbone after multiplying several times in length? We already know that temporary Gigantamax evolutions can only be triggered once per battle, so every opportunity to study Long Meowth should be savored.

Gigantamax Dreadnaw

Several other Gigantamax Pokemon are set to feature in Sword and Shield — including fresh Generation VIII additions like Corviknight, Dreadnaw, and Alcremie — but it’s nice to see some originals also being brought into the fold. While Pikachu, Eevee, and Charizard appear to just be bigger versions of their existing selves, an extra fun degree of care and creativity has been applied in the case of Meowth.

Pokemon Sword and Shield will bring the mainline Pokemon RPG series to a home console for the first time when they simultaneously hit Switch on November 15, 2019.
