Fans of scary games rejoice — the fine folks at Red Barrels have just announced The Outlast Trials, the next game in the Outlast franchise. We only know a little bit about this upcoming game, but from what we can tell, The Outlast Trials may very well be a creepy VR experience.
The announcement revealing The Outlast Trials was made via the Outlast franchise’s Facebook page. It included a short description of this upcoming game set during the Cold War and a single promotional image (seen above in our header) which featured the tagline “Where freedom ends.”

“The Red Barrels team is excited to announce our latest project in the Outlast universe,” the Facebook post began. “Set in the era of the Cold War, The Outlast Trials will allow players to face the horrors that await by themselves or with fellow test subjects[.]”
“The Outlast Trials is still in production,” the post continued, “and as our co-founder David Chateauneuf puts it: ‘Now we’ve done our proof of concept, it is time focus on content creation, variety… and gore.’ Get ready.”

In terms of words, that’s about all the information we have. However, there is what might be one pretty big clue featured in the promotional image: all three of the human faces seen in the picture are wearing goggles that almost seem like a VR headset.
It’s not expressly stated as such, but the inclusion of these goggles on the promotional image may indicate that this next game (whatever it may be) will be either supporting VR or a VR-exclusive title. It should be noted that while it’s possible to play the first two Outlast games in VR, it doesn’t have proper support for the hardware; instead, you’re viewing a “dumb” screen as if you were watching a movie.
The Outlast games are plenty scary — if The Outlast Trials is genuinely coming to VR, it’s sure to be a scary experience. No official release date has been announced, but we’re sure to be hearing more about this one in the future.
