Phantasy Star Online 2 Steam release confirmed

MMORPG fans on PC have something to look forward to: a Phantasy Star Online 2 Steam release has been confirmed. The classic SEGA franchise has been running in Japan for nearly eight years on PC, and now Phantasy Star Online 2 is going to be making its way to Steam.

Gaming industry tweeter @Wario64 reports that the game’s online manual shows information on how to launch the PC version of the game in advance of its actual release. Part of this information includes instructions on how to launch it on Steam, all but confirming a Phantasy Star Online 2 Steam release.

Here’s what the game’s online manual says:

  • Launch PC game version
  • When the download is complete, you can proceed to launch the game by doing the following:
  • Open the Steam client and search for “Phantasy Star Online 2” under the “Library” section, then click “Play”.
  • If you opted to create a desktop shortcut, simply double click on the shortcut to launch the game.

While the manual has let this information slip, there hasn’t yet been any confirmation elsewhere about a Steam release for the game. For example, the most recent announcement on the game’s official website talks up the closed beta test but doesn’t mention Valve’s digital distribution platform at all.

In another area, Steam DB doesn’t yet have a listing for the Phantasy Star Online 2 Steam release. Steam DB typically tracks anything and everything uploaded to Steam in terms of content, even that which hasn’t yet been released or has been removed.

It’s possible that Steam DB’s information is due to the game using some kind of code name while it’s being worked on. Alternatively, the necessary files may have not yet been uploaded to the platform.

In any case, the game’s manual talking about a Steam release is a pretty strong hint that we’ll soon be able to play Phantasy Star Online 2 on that platform. For now, potential players can look forward to the open beta test that’s coming at a later date.
