GDC Summer replacing postponed show, coming in August

GDC was one of the bigger shows to be postponed because of the current pandemic. And now we know when the replacement show will be. Dubbed GDC Summer, this conference will still be held in San Francisco, but it will take place from August 4 to August 6. This, obviously, is three days, which is down from the five GDC usually is.

The press release admits that it will be a “unique” show, but it will still have “the same high level of expert-led talks as the traditional GDC.” There will even be some new stuff, too, like fireside chats, “microtalks,” and a space where people can get help developing their career. That last point is helpful, given how many business-building talks relationships were lost (or never formed) because of GDC’s postponement.

Registration will be opening soon and the schedule for the talks still isn’t posted. It’ll likely be similar to the old schedule, but there will be fewer talks since there are fewer days. Even though, according to experts, the outbreak should clear up by August, the organizers are still monitoring the situation.

“GDC Summer will give the game development community a chance to come together in a way that hasn’t currently been possible due to COVID-19,” said the press release. “Safety remains the GDC organizers’ paramount concern and the GDC team will continue to monitor the latest information from health officials to ensure a safe and compelling event for everyone at GDC Summer, GDC 2021 and beyond.”
