Super Mario remasters 35h anniversary report

Multiple Super Mario remasters reportedly coming later this year

Multiple Super Mario remasters are reportedly on their way. As the Super Mario 35th anniversary approaches, Nintendo has some big plans in store, with part of those plans reportedly including bringing some of the franchise’s classic games to the Nintendo Switch and a new Paper Mario game.

VGC reports that a special event is coming to celebrate the franchise’s 35th anniversary. While Mario Bros. first launched for arcades in 1983, it was the release of Super Mario Bros. for the Famicom (and later the NES) which really kicked off this powerful franchise.

A huge part of the upcoming celebration will be the release of several Super Mario remasters for the Nintendo Switch. Sources speaking to VGC tell them that they’ll be re-releasing most of the franchise’s back catalog optimized to run on the Nintendo Switch.

That’s not all, though, as several new Mario games are also in store. No specifics have been mentioned aside from a planned new Paper Mario game.

The 35th-anniversary celebration was supposed to take place during E3 2020. Since E3 2020 was canceled, Nintendo will be revealing this celebration in an alternate fashion, perhaps through a surprise Nintendo Direct. We can’t say for sure when they’ll be making this announcement, but odds are we’ll hear something sometime around E3 2020s planned dates.

Update: Eurogamer has corroborated VGC’s report with their own sources, also adding some more information. According to this new information, a Super Mario Galaxy remaster and a deluxe version of Super Mario 3D World with new levels are among the upcoming new Super Mario remasters coming later this year.

Gematsu has jumped in as well, adding in Super Mario 64 remastered and Super Mario Sunshine remastered among the new games.
