With so many video game events getting canceled in 2020, the future of events in the back half of the year are still in limbo. PAX has come and addressed the questions of its own premier event, stating that PAX West 2020, as of now, is still happening during the first weekend of September.
The official PAX website put out a post with the information detailing how the Seattle convention was still on track to take place on Labor Day weekend. However, as is with most events, this is not set in stone. The post makes it clear that the organizers intend to monitor the situations and follow the guidelines set by the World Health Organization and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Their optimism stems from the actions taken by the local government and PAX will continue to work with them through the summer. Registration will also begin sometime in the summer.

The convention is just under five months away but it still might be hard to convince people to gather in Seattle of all places. Washington was one of the earlier hotspots for COVID-19 in the United States. Seattle is also in King County, which has the highest amount of cases and deaths in the state especially in homeless communities. The number of infected people in that state has also not begun to fall even if the infection rate is slowing. Governor Jay Inslee is set to have a press conference tonight at 5 PM PT to address the state’s recovery plan.
Five or so months is a while away, but it’s important to remember that the virus makes the timeline of when it is safe to gather so it is still possible that the event could get canceled. The Seattle convention could always go digital like Gamescom 2020, but that may not be as easy for something like PAX since it is usually more focused on community and physically gathering.
