If you were wondering about playing Fortnite on next-gen consoles, some very good news has been revealed today! A Fortnite PS5 and Xbox Series X version have been confirmed for the launch of both next-gen consoles later this year.
Epic Games revealed in a press release that the current Unreal Engine 4 version of Fortnite is getting ready for launch day for both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. One of the world’s most popular Battle Royale games will be available for both consoles on their respective launch days, so you can get right into some next-gen action on the first day.

The Fortnite PS5 and Xbox One versions aren’t going to have any immediate graphical improvements in the way that we might be hoping, though. This is essentially a port of the current console version on the PS4 and Xbox One debuting for the new generation that’s all set to launch during the Holiday 2020 season.
That said, you won’t have to deal with last gen’s graphics for long: Epic Games has also revealed that Fortnite is going to be upgraded to its recently-revealed Unreal Engine 5! The fifth edition of the Unreal Engine is still being worked on and won’t be making its debut until later in 2021. Waiting for some shiny new graphics may be a pain in the butt, but I think it’s safe to say that having a quicker port is preferable than having to wait several months for graphical upgrades.
It will likely take some time for developers to start making serious use of this new engine, but you should expect to see the Fortnite Unreal Engine 5 upgrade make its appearance on PS5 and Xbox Series X sometime in the middle of 2021. For now, you can look forward to playing the Fortnite PS5 and Xbox Series X editions when the game arrives on each console’s respective launch day (whenever the heck that might be).
