Star Wars: Squadrons DLC isn’t happening, EA confirms

EA has confirmed that there will be no Star Wars: Squadrons DLC coming for its space combat game. EA’s Ian Frazier has said that it’s “not trying to treat the game as a live service,” quashing any hopes for new Star Wars: Squadrons game modes or additional content.

Star Wars: Squadrons has launched with a robust single-player campaign along with three multiplayer game modes across several maps. Unfortunately, EA has firmly stated that it won’t be adding any substantial new content to the game in the future — at least for now.

Why there won’t be any Star Wars: Squadrons DLC

Star Wars: Squadrons gives players a lot to do, but diehard fans would surely welcome some new content later on down the line. The game is somewhat lacking in content compared to other Star Wars games and it looks like it’s going to stay that way.

“Never say never, so to speak, but as far as our philosophy goes we’re not trying to treat the game as a live service,” Star Wars: Squadrons Creative Director Ian Frazier told UploadVR.”We don’t want to say, ‘It’s almost done!’ and then dribble out more of it over time, which to be honest is how most games work these days. So we’ve tried to treat it in kind of an old-school approach saying, ‘You’ve paid the $40, this is the game and it’s entirely self-contained. We’re not planning to add more content, this is the game, and we hope you understand the value proposition.'”

While Star Wars: Squadrons will have seasonal multiplayer gameplay, the future of the game will largely be focused on resetting leaderboards for both regular multiplayer and competitive multiplayer gameplay. An experienced player will only be able to focus on fine-tuning their ship loadout and trying to climb the ladder with all of the ships and maps that are already in the game. An Oculus Quest 2 port is also unlikely according to Ian Frazier.

The lack of Star Wars: Squadrons DLC may be disappointing to some, but EA’s Ian Frazier smartly leaves the door open for potential expansion. If Star Wars: Squadrons is successful enough, EA may reverse its decision and come out with some post-launch content — but players shouldn’t hold out hope.
