The PS5 will be unable to play certain “PS4 only” games according to new information from Sony that details how the PS5 backwards compatibility feature will work. The PlayStation 5 will be able to play the “overwhelming majority” of PlayStation 4 games, but a handful of titles are going to be left out.
There is just over one month to go until the PS5 officially launches in the West. The new console will feature a high-performance SSD and the ability to further expand your storage with an additional SSD, providing players for plenty of room to store all of their games. As with many of Sony’s consoles, the PS5 will also have a backwards compatibility feature, and it looks like nearly every PS4 game is going to work on the new console — save for a few.
What are the ‘PS4 only’ games?
The handful of PS4 games that can’t be played on the PS5 will be flagged as “Playable on: PS4 only” on the PlayStation Store, a move that should hopefully avert any consumer confusion. Fortunately, it seems that most of these games aren’t particularly notable titles.

Sony has also confirmed that players don’t have to toss their DualShock 4 controllers just yet. While the DualShock 4 won’t work with PS5 games, it can be used on your PS5 console with supported PS4 games. Naturally, players can also use the PS5’s new DualSense controller with PS4 games, although some features may be unavailable depending on the game. Sony also cautions that some of the supported PS4 games may display “errors or unexpected behavior” on the PS5.
These ten PS4 Only games are not a huge loss considering the size of the game library on the current-gen console; Sony says that there have been over 4,000 PS4 games released to date. For now, gamers can look forward to playing the vast majority of their game library on the PS5 when it launches on November 12, 2020 — that is, if they were able to get their hands on a console before the scalpers.
