1 in 3 PS5 owners Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Spider-Man Miles Morales most poular PS5 games

1 in 3 PS5 owners are playing Black Ops Cold War or Miles Morales

One out of every three PS5 owners are playing either Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War or Spider-Man: Miles Morales, handily making these two titles the most popular purchased PS5 games on the platform.

The newest generation of gaming is featuring a very different kind of competition between Microsoft and Sony. While Microsoft is going with a strategy focusing on the value of Xbox Game Pass, Sony is aiming for a more premium experience with some cool exclusives and the PS Plus Collection. Both consoles have been out for less than a week, and now some clear winners have emerged in the PS5 ecosystem.

The most popular PS5 games are Black Ops Cold War and Spider-Man: Miles Morales

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War most popular PS5 game

A new report from Newzoo shows that 37.8% of PS5 owners have installed Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold WarSpider-Man: Miles Morales trails slightly behind with 36.1% of players having installed the game. This means that 1 in 3 PS5 owners are playing either the newest Call of Duty game or the newest Spider-Man game, although this console’s exclusives aren’t the only winners.

One out of every two players are playing Astro’s Playroom, a game that Sony has decided to include for free with each and every consoleNBA 2K21 sits in a comfortable fourth place with 28.6% of player share, followed by Modern Warfare at 23.1% and Demon’s Souls at 15.8%. Perhaps unsurprisingly, four of the top ten PS5 games made their debut in the previous generation — roughly 1 in 10 players are playing GTA 5Destiny 2, or Ghost of TsushimaGodfall rounds out the top ten with 7.6% of the overall playerbase.

The picture is slightly different on the Xbox side of the equation. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is the clear leader with 34.8% of players owning it, followed by 26.3% of players owning Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and 24.8% of players owning Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. In the latter case, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla sold four times better on the Xbox Series X|S than it did on the PS5 where it’s been outpaced by games from the previous generation.

Ultimately, this means that a large portion of PS5 gamers have happily dived into one of the console’s flagship exclusives; the same can’t be said for the Xbox Series X|S. Either way, the real winner here is Call of Duty with the stellar performance of Black Ops Cold War and Modern Warfare at the start of the newest generation of gaming.
