Metro 2033 multiplayer Exodus underground

Metro 2033 multiplayer could go head-to-head with Escape from Tarkov

4A Games has announced its intention to create a Metro 2033 multiplayer experience, paving the way for competing with games like Escape From TarkovFallout 76, or some of the biggest Battle Royale and survival games out there today.

The Metro 2033 series was first released by 4A Games roughly ten years ago with the debut of Metro 2033. Since then, it has released two more follow-ups in the franchise with Metro: Last Light and Metro Exodus. Now, 4A games is celebrating ten years of Metro 2033 by telling its fans what it’s got in store for the future, including plans to make the first-ever multiplayer experience for a Metro 2033 game.

Metro 2033 multiplayer won’t ‘jump on some trend or bandwagon’

4A Games explains that it’s tried to do Metro 2033 multiplayer in the past. This feature never got far as it had a limited budget and only 60 people on staff at the launch of Metro 2033. Since then, the company’s staff has nearly tripled, it’s opened a new studio, and it will now be dedicating a team to working on multiplayer gameplay, confirming earlier reports of a new multiplayer project.

“As a small studio we have never been able to do justice to these ambitions, and our ideas have never made it beyond the prototype phase,” 4A Games explained (via Nibel). ‘But with Saber’s experience in online gaming, we are now actively exploring multiplayer concepts that will offer a new way to experience the world of Metro.”

“We’re not looking at multiplayer as a box-ticking exercise, or to jump on some trend or bandwagon,” the announcement continued. “As creators, we want to explore a multiplayer experience that makes complete sense in the Metro universe.”

That last sentence gives us an idea of how Metro 2033 multiplayer could work. Metro 2033’s slow, tactical gameplay in a hazardous environment would effectively make it a direct competitor to Escape From Tarkov, although the game could just as easily compete with the Battle Royales out there or online MMOs like Fallout 76.

Metro 2033 multiplayer may come as an add-on to a future game or it may be something standing entirely on its own. One thing is certain, though — multiplayer is being handled by its own team, so it won’t affect all of the cool things players expect to see in the next single-player Metro 2033 game.
