Xbox One Will Support Archaic CD Technology, While PS4 Won’t

After Sony revealed that their next-generation PlayStation 4 hardware wouldn't play compact discs, I laughed it off as a natural progression into an era where music has become increasingly digital and if you're still one of those people who buys CDs, you've got them in your car or on your shelf, and you've already ripped them to your computer.

Or you know, you're not necessarily worried about whether a $400 box of wires and circuits will play them because something in your house does or you have bigger problems than opening your launch day PS4 and immediately sticking The Absolute Best of Fleetwood Mac in to find out that it won't play.

Who knows, maybe that's your tradition. Every time you've bought a PlayStation since Sony launched in 1995, you've listened to Stevie Nicks sing Gypsy on launch day before you do anything else with the system. That's good for you, but it's also really weird.

Now, Penny Arcade Report is saying that Xbox One will play Compact Discs and I'm completely torn. On the one hand, I want to understand that this is really just some stupid competition between Microsoft and Sony to be really petty about minor features that no one really cares about.

"Our machine doesn't do that."

"Yeah, well ours does! Ha! Finally! Suck it, Sony. You've had us on the used games, the invasive camera watching the consumer's every move, but not today. We win this one!" *Everyone celebrates at the Xbox Wire blog. Major Nelson gets the punched poured over his shoulders.*

On the other hand, I really just wanna listen to Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac right now. F*** it.
