Pokémon Art Director Wishes To Simplify The Franchise

Remember the glorious days of Pokémon Red and Blue before the series became bogged down by berries, breeding, rollerblades, and all sorts of other crazy things that have been added in subsequent generations? I miss the days when there were only 151 creatures to collect, and believe it or not, I'm not alone.

Series art director Ken Sugimori recently expressed his desire for the series to return to its roots and go with a more simple design. In an interview with We Love Pokémon magazine, Sugimori cited the first generation of the series as the kind of simplicity he'd like to recapture. That said, he noted that while they won't be able to reduce the number of Pokémon, they may instead be able to cut down on the number of attacks, items, and the like.

Of course, this doesn't mean that this will necessarily happen in Game Freak's next batch of Pokémon titles, but at this point, a simpler take isn't out of the question. Bearing that in mind, what direction do you hope the franchise takes in the next generation? Are Pokémon X & Y a bit too complex and convoluted? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
