It’s been a long time since we’ve seen anything on Tetris 99, but Nintendo has today released the Tetris 99 2.2.0 patch notes along with a fresh new update for the game. The Tetris 99 2.2.0 update is actually the first patch or release of any kind for Tetris 99 since the 2.1.0 patch was released all the way back in December 2019. That update added such major features as a Team Battle Mode and password matchmaking, so will the first Tetris 99 patch in a year and a half be as significant?

- You can now exchange some of your previously downloaded event themes (Special Themes) for game tickets using the Customize menu. Each event theme is worth 30 tickets.
- OVERVIEW
- The gameplay has been improved by addressing a few additional bugs.
- Compatible with Ver. 2.1.0 via Local Network (Local Arena). Not compatible with Ver 2.0.0 or earlier via Local Network. Please check each system’s update data version.
As you may notice, despite being 18 months apart from the Tetris 99 December 2019 update, the Tetris 99 April 2021 patch is nowhere near as expansive as fans still playing may have hoped.
The most significant new feature in the Tetris 99 2.2.0 update is, at least, something that players have asked Nintendo to include for a long time, and that’s the ability to exchange certain Special Themes for 30 tickets apiece. These Tetris 99 game themes were originally part of special events, such as new Nintendo game releases, and allow players to customize how Tetris 99 looks. As of a previous patch they were made available to buy in the game’s store, and now players can get rid of their unused themes to buy different ones in the Customize menu.
Beyond that, Nintendo has supposedly gone through and improved the game by eliminating a number of bugs, but unfortunately it does not specify what those bugs actually were. Nevertheless, it’s good to see that Nintendo is still supporting Tetris 99, especially following the self-imposed demise of the similar Mario 35 battle royale game.
