Breath of the Wild 2 Skyward Sword

Is there a Breath of the Wild 2 Skyward Sword connection?

With the big new trailer for the game revealed at Nintendo E3 Direct, is the publisher teasing a Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild 2 Skyward Sword connection? The BOTW 2 trailer had a lot of great new gameplay details about the new Zelda game, but it also spent a lot of time in the clouds, with Link sky-diving far above Hyrule. Is the upcoming release of Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD more than just a coincidence?

Is there a BOTW 2 and Skyward Sword connection?

Breath of the Wild 2 Skyward Sword

A lot of the new BOTW 2 trailer seems to take place in a sky city that may be connected to Skyloft, the floating city of Skyward Sword. Following the creepy start to the new Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 trailer with Link, Zelda, and the strange zombie creature that may or may not be Ganondorf, one of the first shots of Link is falling from a very great height through the clouds. After that he can be seen hand-gliding through floating islands and exploring some sort of cloud civilization far above Hyrule.

All of which brings to mind Skyward Sword, which was partly set in an ancient city far above the clouds and featured a lot of flying. Of course, Skyward Sword HD will be released next month, which Nintendo also referenced in today’s Direct alongside a Zelda Game and Watch. At first fans simply assumed that Nintendo was just remastering Skyward Sword, but if there is a direct story link with Breath of the Wild 2 it makes sense for the game to be re-released on Switch so new players can familiarize themselves with the story. It’s certainly not the first time Nintendo has done this sort of teasing with Breath of the Wild 2, as the first 2019 trailer hinted at a connection to Twilight Princess too.

There are still a lot of questions to be answered about Breath of the Wild 2. Will Zelda be playable at last, as so many fans hope? Perhaps more importantly, we still don’t know if the game will actually be called Breath of the Wild 2. Hopefully we’ll find out more as we approach the game’s 2022 release window.
