Here's iPhone 13's stunning Cinematic Mode, explained

As part of today’s extensive Apple Event, we got our first glimpse at the new iPhone, the iPhone 13. More than just a receiver of calls, the new iPhone is a bona fide cinema-quality camera. It comes with a Cinematic Mode, which lets you shoot mobile videos with the proficiency and finish of big-screen movies. iPhone 13 Cinematic Mode explained

Cinematic Mode on iPhone 13 is a lot more than just a few tweaks for higher-quality videos. Instead, it’s a full-fledged shift towards professional filmmaking on iPhone, with plenty of impressive features to achieve this. Most notable is how the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini will use the camera’s focus. Like you see in big-screen movies, iPhone 13 will now automatically detect what the focus object in a shot is, and switch the camera’s focus according to these calculations.

The same thing happens when a new subject enters the camera frame. If someone is about to walk into the picture, iPhone 13 will automatically sense this and focus on the new arrival. This means you’ll be able to film videos with increasingly complex sequences, without having to play around with focus settings. Equally, if the subject of the videos averts their gaze to somewhere else, iPhone 13 will pick up on this, and change the focus based on the person’s line of sight.

Of course, the traditional iPhone camera sequences are here, too. As always, you can tap on the screen to shift focus to a different area, and tap once more to lock and track that region in focus. The camera is better than ever, too, with a 12MP lens that shoots video in Dolby Vision HDR. It’s the closest Apple has ever been to cinema-quality video, and it’s all in the new iPhone.
