Eternals confirms Superman exists in the MCU

A Marvel’s Eternals Superman reference has seemingly confirmed that the Man of Steel exists in some form in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, or at least that Marvel characters know about him. A clip showing the Eternals MCU Superman Easter egg has been shared online as part of the marketing for the latest Marvel movie’s theatrical release — possibly upsetting Superman fans further, given that there still hasn’t been a new movie confirmed for DC’s leading superhero.

Eternals Superman Easter egg confirms the Man of Steel is in the MCU

A new clip of Eternals features a kid seeing Ikaris (Richard Madden) in action and calling him Superman, due to the way he was flying and “shooting laser beams out of his eyes,” to which Ikaris responds, “I don’t wear a cape.” The clip seems to be hanging a lantern on the obvious comparisons between Ikaris and Superman, especially the effects used on the way light beams shoot from his eyes as they seem closely modeled on those from Man of Steel.

This is certainly the first mention of any DC heroes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but not the first time it has happened in a Marvel movie. In the first Spider-Man movie (2002) both Superman and Shazam are directly namedropped and referenced. Likewise, in The LEGO Batman Movie, Batman’s secret passphrase is “Iron Man sucks.”

However, while this is a fun confirmation that Superman exists as a franchise in the MCU, it’s probably little comfort to DC fans who didn’t get an announcement of a Superman movie, game, or even a Smallville animated series at the DC Fandome event at the weekend, despite at least one movie project supposedly being in production. As for fans looking forward to Eternals, however, they’ve also got reason to be upset as a number of massive spoilers have been leaked online following a recent press event.
