With the highly-anticipated Thor: Love and Thunder landing in just a few weeks, the film’s director and writer Taika Waititi has been talking up his new Marvel movie. But it seems superheroes aren’t the only thing Waititi is chatting about, as the award-winning director has also shared some early plans for his upcoming new Star Wars movie and where he plans to take its plot. While multiple directors have been tapped to helm new Star Wars projects, Waititi’s recent, revealing comments are the first to offer any details on what fans can expect when the galaxy far, far away finally returns to the big screen.
Director Taika Waititi hints at Star Wars movie plot
Prolific writer, director, and actor Taika Waititi has been in the news plenty lately to promote his next film, Thor: Love and Thunder. But Waititi, who was also behind the camera for 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, surprised fans by also revealing plans for his upcoming Star Wars movie, confirmed to be the next feature film in the franchise.
Talking to Total Film, he revealed he had no interest in revisiting existing characters or stories within the expansive universe created by George Lucas. “Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand. I don’t think that I’m any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon. Ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.’ That all stands alone,” he shared.
Waititi further expanded on his plans to skip the nostalgia-fueled fan service for something totally fresh: “I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world. Otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story.” Of course, Waititi is no stranger to the popular sci-fi saga, having directed The Mandalorian‘s first season finale and providing the voice of bounty hunter droid IG-II.
In other news, we researched into whether or not Loki in Thor: Love and Thunder and a new Game of Thrones spin-off is in the works.
