Chadwick Boseman, star of 2018’s Black Panther has received a posthumous Emmy nomination ahead of the Emmys 2022. The actor, who sadly passed away in 2020, reprised his iconic role of T’Challa for an episode of Marvel’s Disney+ series What If…?, with this performance receiving a nod ahead of the Emmys 2022. The episode aired in the summer of 2021, nearly a year after Bosewick’s untimely death, making the recognition a loving tribute to the talented actor, as well as a nice way to build upon his legacy.
Chadwick Boseman’s legacy lives on with posthumous Emmy nomination
Chadwick Boseman was best known for his iconic turn as T’Challa, a character he established in Captain America: Civil War before turning it into a starring role in 2018’s Black Panther. The actor also reprised the role in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Beyond his live-action takes on the King of Wakanda, Boseman voiced the character one final time in Disney+’s Marvel’s What If…? series. The animated show played with the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s timelines and character interactions, setting up engaging scenarios that significantly diverged from established canon.
The series’ second episode was titled What If…T’Challa Became a Star-Lord? For this final performance as T’Challa, Boseman has been nominated for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance. Boseman shares this honor with two other Marvel stars, F. Murray Abraham, who was nominated for Moon Knight and Jeffrey Wright, nominated for another episode of What If…?
Of course, this isn’t the first time the beloved actor’s been recognized for his work beyond his death. Boseman was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and, while he didn’t win the Oscar, he did receive a posthumous Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award, and Screen Actor’s Guild Award for the performance.
It remains to be seen if he’ll be honored with another win for What If…?, but regardless of the outcome, the nomination serves as a nice tribute that should also bring some fresh, well-deserved attention to his final turn as T’Challa. Season 1 of What If…?, including What If…T’Challa Became a Star-Lord, is currently available on Disney+.
