The Walking Dead held its final panel at San Diego Comic-Con today, but two people who weren’t on the guest list were Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira. They made a surprise appearance to reveal the Walking Dead movie has been canceled and will be replaced with a limited series featuring their characters, Rick Grimes and Michonne Hawthorne.
The cancellation of The Walking Dead movie
The first of The Walking Dead movies was supposed to feature Andrew Lincoln in his role as Rick Grimes, concluding the character’s story after his departure from the TV series. The movie was due to air in theaters rather than on AMC and no reason has been given for its cancelation, but it will now be replaced with a limited series consisting of just six episodes. Although that series doesn’t yet have a name, it does have a basic premise that will conclude the stories of both characters:
“This series presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world. Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead… And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before? Are they enemies? Lovers? Victims? Victors? Without each other, are they even alive — or will they find that they, too, are the Walking Dead?”
Scott Gimple will be showrunner for the new limited series set in The Walking Dead universe, while Lincoln and Gurira will also be executive producers. The show is expected to be aired on AMC at some point next year.
In other news, Dinkum will be coming to consoles once it leaves early access on Steam. Elsewhere, Pokemon Go players have been offered compensation following the Facebook login issues earlier today.
