Nintendo Sells 11.5 Million 3DS/2DS Consoles Over Handheld’s Lifetime

The Wii U may not be doing as well as Nintendo has hoped, but their 3DS handheld has definitely made up for any lack from the Wii U. Nintendo announced today that they sold "record numbers" of 3DS games in 2013, over 16 million retail and digital games. This is 45% more than what they sold in 2012.

In addition, Nintendo has sold over 11.5 million of the 3DS units during the handheld's lifetime. This figure includes all iterations of the 3DS, including the 3DS XL and 2DS.

“Nintendo 3DS is a powerhouse with games and experiences that appeal to all kinds of players,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing, in a press release. “We’re not slowing down in 2014. With more games featuring fan-favorite franchises on the way, the best days of Nintendo 3DS are still to come.”

These 2014 3DS games include Yoshi's New Island, which will release on March 14, 2014, and the final installment of the second Professor Layton trilogy, Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, releasing on February 28th.
