Ridley Scott Working on Halo Digital Feature [Update: Filming Starts This Week]

[Update 3] Microsoft has confirmed that Ridley Scott's upcoming Halo "digital feature" will begin filming this week with an anticipated release of later this year.

Seeing as how the heavily-rumored Halo 2 Anniversary is believed to be out this holiday season, perhaps this video project will tie into the game's release. After all, the company did something similar with Halo 4 and its Forward Unto Dawn series.

[Update 2] Contrary to Microsoft's prior statement earlier this year, it appears that Ridley Scott is in fact involved in a Halo film project.

The Big M has confirmed that the famed director behind Alien and Blade Runner is working with 343 Industries on a "digital feature project" set in the Halo universe. Better yet, it's going to launch later this year.

The aforementioned developer, Xbox Entertainment Studios, and Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions are all involved, as well as Sergio Mimica-Gezzan, of Battlestar Galactica fame, who will serve as the project's director.  Both Scott and Scott Free TV President David Zucker will be involved as executive producers.

According to TheWrap, this "digital feature" will be somewhat reminiscent in format to 2012's Forward Unto Dawn, which was released as a five-part series on YouTube. In addition, the outlet claims that the project will star a "surgically-enhanced super soldier who is not Master Chief," and Paul Scheuring, the creator of Prison Break, may be on board to write the story.

Those still eagerly anticipating Spielberg's Halo TV series need not worry, as MS has confirmed that this Ridley Scott project is "completely separate from the premium Halo television series executive produced by Steven Spielberg, which is still on track."

[Update 1] In a statement sent to Eurogamer, Microsoft squashed the rumor that a Halo movie is currently in the works. Bummer, I know.

We plan to continue telling the Halo story through innovative channels, but there are no plans for a Halo motion picture at this time.

The Halo franchise encompasses many elements, including games, action figures, novels and more. As always, we have many projects in the works that offer us the opportunity to bring in new audiences to the franchise, as we did in the past with Halo Legends and Halo: Forward Unto Dawn.

[Original] Ridley Scott, the legendary film director behind Alien, is reportedly set to produce a "live-action feature-length digital" set in Microsoft's iconic science fiction universe. That's right, a Halo move may actually happen.

In a conversation on Twitter, Production Weekly outed the alleged news, adding that Paul Scheuring is writing it. The conversation was pulled rather quickly, but not before a screenshot of the conversation was captured, courtesy of Scified.com.

Would you like to see the Halo universe continue to expand beyond gaming? From novels to television shorts to toys, there's no doubt Microsoft plans to milk this franchise for all it's worth. Let us know what you think of the idea of having a Halo movie produced by Ridley Scott in the comments below.
