Microsoft has confirmed that its game development studio, Microsoft Studios, has been hit by layoffs. This news comes just days after the announcement that Phil Spencer will now serve as Head of Xbox. Coincidence?
There's no word on how many individuals have lost their jobs, but here's to hoping the extent of the damage isn't particularly large. In acknowledgement of the layoffs, the Big M released the following statement to IGN:
At Xbox, our goal is to constantly create new fun, social and interactive entertainment experiences. As part of our commitment to this goal, we are always evaluating our development priorities, and there are times when decisions need to be made to realign plans and refocus our efforts. Microsoft Studios continues to grow as an overall organization as we focus and invest in key priority areas that will drive future profitable growth.
Microsoft Studios isn't the only company that has suffered layoffs lately, as a number of first-party studios at Sony have been trimmed down as well.
