Microsoft Removing Xbox Live Gold Requirement for Netflix, Hulu [Update: Confirmed]

[Update] Microsoft has confirmed that access to applications like Netflix, HBO Go, and Twitch will no longer require a Gold subscription for Xbox users. This change will go into effect next month.

[Original] New reports suggest that Microsoft may be removing the Xbox Live Gold requirement for access to streaming services like Netflix and Hulu.

According to Ars Technica, "multiple sources within Microsoft have been briefed on plans to make a long-awaited change to the Xbox Live Gold paywall for streaming media services. According to our sources, Xbox 360 and Xbox One users will soon no longer need a paid subscription to Xbox Live Gold to access Netflix, Hulu, and other streaming media apps."

But don't get too excited, as it looks like the Big M plans to compensate by moving other services behind a paywall. "Additionally, we've been told that Xbox Live Gold may put other services behind the paywall to make up for this shift," the outlet added.

Keep in mind that Microsoft has yet to confirm these reports, so we'll have to treat it as rumor for the time being. That said, E3 is right around the corner, so we'll likely hear something on this front very soon.
