Overwatch 2 Down For Many as DDoS Attack Causes Launch Day Server Issues

Overwatch 2 is repeatedly going down for many players as a result of two DDoS attacks that have taken place during its launch day. This has caused server issues that Blizzard game director Aaron Keller has confirmed the team is actively working on.

DDoS attacks bring Overwatch 2 down on its release day

Keller shared the unfortunate news on Twitter, noted that the Overwatch 2 team is “making progress on server issues and stability, as well as working through a second DDoS attack.” The perpetrators of the DDoS attack have not been named, though at the time of this writing, online stability has remained sporadic.

What is a DDoS attack?

A DDoS attack is a distributed denial-of-service attack, in which perpetrators overwhelm a targeted server, service, or network with what is essentially fake traffic. In this instance, Overwatch 2’s servers have been flooded by these false users, meaning that other players can’t get online and the game’s servers are crumbling under the pressure.

Aside from the DDoS attack, the Overwatch 2 launch has proven to be a popular one, with new players finding themselves waiting in lengthy queues in order to access the online shooter sequel.

Hopefully, Blizzard can rectify these teething issues, and players can hop into the newly released game sooner rather than later.
