It's only been a few days since Capcom officially canceled the fan-driven project Mega Man Legends 3, and already the backlash has begun, and it's only getting worse. At first, it was just hundreds of bitter comments by fans on the cancelation notice at Capcom's official blog, but then the punches started to swing.
@CapcomEuro has already clarified that he meant to say that he wished more fans were involved in the Mega Man Legends 3 project, but I'm sure that still doesn't sit well with those fans. One of them Brian Austrin, who had committed weeks, if not months, of work to the project, had an interview with Game Informer and even warned of threats that a hacker group might send DDoS attacks on Capcom's website:
"I really think that their trust bank has been shattered… This isn’t the first thing that they’ve done, not just with Mega Man, this is the second Mega Man cancelation within four months. Then we have the other stuff like the Mercenaries 3D DRM, and it just keeps going and going, and they’re establishing this track record." Austrin even warns that he's heard reports that a group of anonymous community members is planning a denial of service attack, similar to the hacker attack Sony and many other companies endured.
Some have reacted by creating blogs to save the project like Operation Mega Man, while others have reacted by making a collage of all the questionable transgressions that Capcom has committed over the last year or so (click image to enlarge):
And it seems that the MML3 fiasco has put some fans over the edge at Comic-Con:
This has led to an unconfirmed incident on 4chan where even a fan cosplaying as Tron Bonne wasn't able to enter the Capcom booth:
Comic-confag here. Went to capcom's booth last night. Security is really heavy this year eveywhere and they're super strict, but it was insane at capcom. I heard someone just say megaman and they almost threw him out, and they stopped a tron cosplayer from coming anywhere near it.
I saw that too! She was walking toward the booth with her friends. I was nearby and was like "Oh shit this'll be good" so I watched. Seth Killian looked at this rent-a-cop near him, pointed to her, and he went up to her with two other guys like "You can't be dressed like that. Company wants you gone." They threatened to confiscate her badge. I couldn't believe it.
This is only the start of Comic-Con, and it seems like it's only going to get worse before it gets better…
