FFXIV has received an expansion every two years since it was relaunched in 2013. However, according to its latest financial results, the popular MMO will not receive an expansion this year. Despite this, Square Enix has confirmed that it will continue supporting the MMO for the foreseeable future.
Square Enix won’t release any MMO expansions in 2023 but has planned multiple new games
Square Enix’s latest financial report showed declining sales in the MMO segment, which isn’t bad considering the massive success of FFXIV’s latest expansion, Endwalker (via TechRaptor). However, the company has no expansions planned for FFXIV and Square Enix’s other MMO, Dragon Quest X. This decision will likely not reverse this trend. Instead, Square Enix aims to retain users “through a variety of operational initiatives.”
However, it isn’t all bad news. Square Enix has “additional titles slated for launch in Q4 and beyond.” This includes an as-yet-unannounced IP. No details are known about this, except that it falls in its HD Games category, which includes titles from Power Wash Simulator to Outriders Worldslayer.
There is no news about support slowing down for FFXIV, and players can expect various in-game events despite no new expansion. As for the new IP, a new Square Enix trademark filing a few months ago hinted at a potential Parasite Eve remake.
