Roblox will soon be allowing experiences that include mature content like profanity and gambling simulation, according to a new report. This falls in line with prior news that Roblox was looking into a possible mature 17+ rating for the games on its platform.
Roblox has been looking into mature content since 2021
Bloxy News, which is a reliable source on Twitter that reports on the latest news for Roblox, has stated that new Age Guidelines reveal that the game will soon allow profanity, romantic themes and dating, gambling simulation, and alcohol reference and use. This apparently comes from RobloxTrackers, which has both a Twitter and a Github that tracks changes to the game’s API files.
Some users have reacted with surprise and concern that this is a slippery slope towards content that parents might object to. Roblox does have an age ID verification system that the company has rolled out over the last two years, but a BBC investigation of the platform revealed “a sex problem” with what is supposed to be a children’s game. Some parents fear there are not enough safety controls in the game to prevent their children from seeing and participating in inappropriate content.
While it’s unclear when Roblox will be permitting mature content, this does follow prior statements from the game’s CEO David Baszucki and news from 2021 that Roblox was considering age enforcement. In an interview with The Verge, he revealed that the platform is “seeing the fastest growth in players who are in their older teens to early-20s.” In fact, it references Roblox looking at experiences aimed at adults, or specifically people 17 and up.
