Carmack Shakes the Earth with RAGE Xbox 360 Install Size

22 gigabytes. Or 22,528 megabytes, which makes it sound even worse. That's how much space you'll need if you want to install RAGE to your Xbox 360. I don't have to tell you that's a lot of HDD space. There are no partial installs, either.

id Software mastermind John Carmack broke the news during his QuakeCon keynote address:

On the 360 we don't have a partial install option; it's all or nothing, which is kind of unfortunate. It means you have to install 21-22GB (which takes a long time), but if you get it and play it on the 360, that's the way to go.

Before PS3 fans start high-fiving over Blu-ray's massive storage capacity, Carmack says that Blu-ray is worse than DVD in "total latency time", and that the PS3 has memory issues:

The PS3 has a good bit less memory available than the 360 because it's got a split memory space where you use as much texture as you want and the rest of it's available for other things…

Carmack also voiced frustrations that consoles are too far behind what PCs are capable of now:

It is extremely frustrating knowing that the hardware we've got on the PC is often ten times as powerful as the consoles…

But the PC isn't in the clear either, as Carmack says that it has "been a struggle in many cases to get the game running at 60 frames per second on the PC like it does on a 360".

If this were someone else, I'd comment on how they seem to be bitching about having to do their job. But this is John fucking Carmack. He can bitch all he wants. I'll still buy his games. You can watch his entire keynote below:
