A lot of hubbub has been made over the Red Dead Redemption 2 install size, given how big the game is said to be. Rockstar has finally come out and officially revealed how much hard drive you’ll need for the upcoming open-world Western game. PS4 disc installations will require 99 GB and PS4 digital owners will need those same 99 GB along with an extra 50 for the installation process. Xbox One owners will need 107 GB either way.
Rockstar’s support page reveals information similar to what we’ve only heard rumors about. The recent PS4 Pro bundle said that Red Dead Redemption 2 required 105 gigs from PS4 hard drives on the box. It would also explain the rumor about the game being on two Blu-Rays. Microsoft’s store stated that the game would be around 89 GB on the Xbox One. However, both final installation sizes are little off.
This is, obviously, quite a bit bigger than the original Red Dead Redemption, which weighed in just under 9 GB on PS3 and a hair over 7 GB on Xbox 360. Although it is still pretty large by today’s standards. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is currently nearing 74 GB on PS4 and that’s without all the planned DLC and updates Ubisoft is currently producing. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and Spider-Man are each hovering around 53 GB on PS4. And this is without any of the DLC both games have coming.
The Red Dead Redemption 2 install size puts it in the upper echelon of hard drive eating games and it isn’t even out yet. Since Rockstar is likely planning another big multiplayer push with its online mode like it did with Grand Theft Auto 5, then players are going to have to sequester an ever increasing chunk of their hard drive to one single game. It’s a big ask for people especially if other titles begin to start tipping into 100 GB before their season passes start pushing out content.
