SOMA Is The Next Amnesia [Video Preview]

“It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.” ~ Phillip K. Dick

By the grace of Frictional Games, I got the chance to play a larger portion of SOMA than I was able to at E3 earlier this year and have put together a few highlight videos of my playthrough. Check out the two video reels in the feature below.

One of my favorite parts of SOMA is the fact that it draws heavily from the horror elements that made the Amnesia series so great in the absence of supernatural elements. At times it felt as scary as playing Alien: Isolation except there’s not just one creature to worry about. The well-crafted environments and jump scares do a great job of setting the tone for the rest of the game. My favorite being the ability to interact with certain objects or dead bodies to learn more information.

What’s scarier than being stalked by a monster you can’t kill? Not being able to run or distract it at all. During the underwater portions of the game you may find yourself having to navigate sunken wreckage to progress in the story. This makes encounters with enemies far more terrifying. Trying to quickly flee to an exit while submerged in water without forgetting where I needed to go was the most harrowing part of the newest portion of SOMA I played.

SOMA will be available on PC and PS4 on September 22nd.
