Many Just Cause fans may remember the plethora of secrets Just Cause 2 had to offer such as the Lost Island Wreck, Bubble Gun Weapon, and the Banana Fail message. Like similar open-world games, Just Cause 3 has it's own share of secrets and I'm happy to announce that I've managed to find a few.
In Just Cause 3, the world map representing the Republic of Medici is over 400 square miles, so looking for a specific easter egg can become quite difficult and you can easily get lost in the mountains or wilderness. Luckily for you, I've compiled a video showing off four unique hidden gems that I discovered during my 35 hour journey within the game. You can see what they are and where to find them in the video below.
Being the curious explorer I am, I decided to dig into the Just Cause 3 file archives in an attempt to discover more secrets. What I found was far more comprehensive than I ever imagined.
There are precisely 71 'game_hash_name' files and each file contains the Hash, Byte Offset, Size, Dcomp Size and Path of the game files. I opened each file in a text editor and searched for keywords such as "easter", "easteregg" and "secret". The results were in my favor and I ended up finding some amazing easter egg references that are yet to be discovered in-game.
In the image here, you can see various references and file paths from the search I did.
The first one on the list is PogoStick. This is a reference to a two-handed weapon that can be found in the Capital City located in Region 03, which is Insula Stritate. The Capital City in that region is called City Diravello and it's located in Regno. I spent over three hours looking for the PogoStick weapon throughout the city and it's surrounding areas but unfortunately could not find it.
Next we have the Duck Boat, which is also located somewhere in the region of Insula Stritate. Whether this is a duck shaped boat or a boat shaped duck, I can't wait until it is found.
The third reference on the list is "Easter Egg Mario Cart" and it honestly took me by shock when I first noticed it. I am a big fan of the Mario Kart games and I'm sure many of you are as well. Is this a raceble go-kart that looks like something out of the Mario Kart games or is this just a reference to the Mugello Farina Duo, which is a race car that can be found near the coast of Baia? One of the main characters in Just Cause 3 is also named Mario, so it can also be related to him. There is no reference to a location so I'm not quite sure where to start looking. If any of you manage to find out then you must let us know.
Next up we have a lot of text that refers to Majestic 3, Timetravel Tube and Rico Teleporter. I've spent some time trying to connect these references to the previous games and to forms of existing media in the real world but haven't been able to come up with a concrete explanation. I'm going to go ahead and assume Rico meets Marty McFly somewhere in Medici and gains the ability to travel through time.
The Monorail Town reference is the next big thing that caught my eye. If you ever watched popular television show The Simpsons, then you might understand this easter egg. Back in 1993, The Simpsons aired an episode called Marge vs. the Monorail and the citizens of Springfield sang a song called "The Monorail Song" during the episode. The locations named Brockway, North Haverbrook and Ogdenville don't exist in Just Cause 3's Republic of Medici. Instead, they exist in the fictional town of Springfield, which is where The Simpsons takes place. While I'm not exactly sure where this easter egg is located in Just Cause 3, it is safe to say that there are plenty of trains that carry cargo, constantly moving around in the Insula Stritate region.
Next, we have a big reference to the Dark Souls games with "soulsbonfire". I would really like to know where this is located and whether Rico will have an animation where he sits down at the bonfire, just like your character in Dark Souls does when recharging at a Bonfire.
Update: The Dark Souls Bonfire easter egg has been located. Check out the video below to see it for yourself.
Lastly, we have some citations for Omar Easter Egg, Snowman, Bolos Bananas Bundle, Landfill, and Egg Obelisk. The last two on the list are self-explanatory and I have already found the Snowman and Bolos Banana Stand, both of which are included in the video near the top of this page. The Omar Easter Egg could be a reference to Ismail Omar from Just Cause 2 or Omar Shakir, a Just Cause 3 content producer who works at Avalanche Studios. My guess is as good as yours.
There is one more interesting secret in Just Cause 3 that I found. Somewhere inside the military base known as Porto Darsena, there are four switches next to a giant circular pad. The numbers on the ground read 103013, which may be a reference to the date of Oct 30, 2013. I spent some time pressing the switches in various orders but didn't manage to solve the puzzle. Underneath this area could be anything ranging from a special vehicle to a nuclear military weapon. This could also be one of the teleporter machines referenced in the game files.
Check out the images below and let me know what you think this might be.
With the official release of Just Cause 3 being only a few hours away, there are bound to be more easter eggs and secrets found inside the game by other players. If you find something interesting, don't hesitate to share it in the comments below.
