In Persona 5, there are numerous DLCs content hidden amongst the game data. These add-ons have been unlocked through datamining the Playstation 3 version of the game and editing a couple of files. Most of the content consists of character costumes, background music themes and exclusive Persona’s that cannot be obtained on a normal playthrough. Whether or not Atlus chooses to release the content for a price remains to be seen. Apart from all the on-disc DLC content, costumes are the most noteworthy mention.
Usually, the main character known as Akira Kurusu wears a black buttoned-down coat, along with a pair of red and black plaid pants. With the DLC content enabled, you can change the outfit for Akira (MC) and the rest of your party members in order to resemble various characters from the Shin Megami Tensei franchise, as well as other Atlus titles. I’ve gotten a good look at what’s on display and picked out a handful of stylish costumes that caught my eye.
5. SMT: IV Outfits
Back in 2013, Atlus released Shin Megami Tensei: IV for the Nintendo 3DS and it turned out to be a well rounded game that stood apart from the crowd of action rpg’s. In SMT: IV, you take control of a hero named Flynn who must confront the Black Samurai that’s bringing chaos into the world. I recall putting over 60 hours into SMT: IV and taking pleasure in the first-person aspect of the game.
There are two DLC costumes in Persona 5 which I can easily point out from SMT: IV, particularly due to the blue striped coats which the Samurai’s wear. While I’m not able to identify who Morgana is supposed to be, I can tell you that Akira (MC) is wearing Flynn’s costume. As for Ryuji, if you look carefully at the yellow scarf you will realize that he’s dressed as Jonathan, a fellow Samurai and party member. I’m admiring the outfits but I think Ryuji would make a better Walter due to both characters sharing a striking resemblance in hair and personality.
4. Catherine Outfits
One of Atlus’ most well-received titles is Catherine, a puzzle platformer released on the Playstation 3 in early 2011. Catherine is about a man named Vincent Brooks who has continuous nightmares after cheating on his girlfriend, Katherine, with another woman named Catherine. In the nightmares, Vincent has to make his way through various obstructions and creatures. Amidst the confusing nightmares, Vincent enjoys going to the bar and hanging out with a couple of his friends to ease off the stress.
In Persona 5, there are three costumes from Catherine available for your party members. Yusuke can dress up as Vincent’s longtime friend Orlando, while Akira (MC) as Vincent and Morgana as one of the sheep’s you encounter in the nightmares. These outfits are splendid and Akira’s hair even matches Vincent’s, adding bonus points to the overall look. I’m a fan of the Persona 3: Portable cameo of Vincent, but I think this is a much better easter egg.
3. SMT: Persona 3 Outfit
The most well-known Atlus game in history is Persona 3, which was first released back in 2006 for the PS2. Since then it’s been remade for the PSP, with a few changes including the ability to play as a female protagonist. The original story is about a young boy joining forces with SEES, a group of people who are dedicated to eliminating shadows and exploring the world of Tartarus. Some of the best Persona series music came from this game’s OST, including tracks such as “Burn My Dread”, “Mass Destruction” and one of my favorites – “The Snow Queen”.
Although Persona 5 doesn’t include any music by Lotus Juice, it does have something as equally satisfying in store for Persona 3 fans. There’s no one more appropriate than Yusuke when it comes to cosplaying as the protagonist from Persona 3, who is a blue haired male with a concerned look on his face. If you told me the above picture was taken from a Persona 3 HD remake, then I might just believe you if it weren’t for Akira standing in the background.
2. Shadow Operator Outfits
In Persona history, the Shadow Operators, otherwise known as Shadow Workers in Japanese, were a group of people who policed the world by hunting shadows and recognizing Persona activity. The group is led by Mitsuru Kirijo, whom we first encounter in Persona 3, although there was no mention of the group in any of the game’s until Persona 4 Arena released. Other key members include various characters from Persona 3.
Despite these costumes not making an appearance in a previous Atlus game, the bizarre masks and sophisticated looking tops suggest a connection to the Shadow Operators group. Each character is wearing an armband that has the initials S.W inscribed on it, meaning Shadow Walker. You may not be able to read this in the above screenshot, but the right-side picture of Yusuke in “Outfit #3” has the same armband with text that is more legible. We will probably uncover more information about the Shadow Walkers in a future title, such as Persona 5 Arena, which has a chance of being in development if you consider how successful the previous iteration turned out.
1. SMT: Devil Summoner Outfits
My favorite DLC costume set is part of an older game called “Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army”. That is indeed a lengthy title. Devil Summoner is about a high schooler named Raidou Kuzunoha, who possesses the ability to capture demons and control them to do his bidding, which is usually in the form of battle. This is one of the lesser known mainstream Atlus titles, yet favored among fans.
It would be a crime to describe these outfits as being anything other than classy. For those that may not remember some of the characters in Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha, there was a cat who went by the name Gouto and had green eyes. This is exactly who Morgana, a shapeshifting cat from Persona 5, is dressed as. Ryuji on the other hand looks like a student from Yumizuki High School, which is where Raidou Kuzunoha is from. Speaking of Raidou, the Persona 5 protagonist looks fabulous in those clothes, though I think Yusuke would’ve been a better fit here. Nonetheless, this will be the first costume set that I’d like to equip my party members with once it is officially released.
